Gustafer Yellowgold is a best-selling and two-time GRAMMY Award-nominated multimedia project for families, created by songwriter Morgan Taylor. The Gustafer Yellowgold Show, coming to Symphony Space in NYC on February 2nd, is an all-ages performance of live music, animated illustrations and storytelling. The show includes material from best-selling Gustafer Yellowgold Audible Original “I’m From the Sun” alongside classic fan favorites.
Taylor’s funny and touching multimedia presentation about a little guy from the Sun who landed in the Minnesota woods offers adult crossover appeal, making Gustafer Yellowgold’s show a truly all-ages experience.
Gustafer recently discussed this performance and more via an exclusive interview.
Meagan Meehan (MM): How did you initially get interested in music and how come you focus on kid’s music?
Gustafer Yellowgold (GY): I was born into my older siblings’ record collection, and my father was a fantastic pianist. My mom always had her little A.M. radio on in the mornings, so music was as much a part of the fabric of my childhood as the shag carpet I crawled around on.
MM: How did you form your band and select your name?
GY: Gustafer Yellowgold is the character AND the band name. Although I’m primarily a one-man show, the entire Gustafer project came after many, many years playing in bands and loving to draw. I finally combined the two and BOOM – Gustafer was born.
MM: How did you go about breaking into the music scene?
GY: As a teenager in Dayton, Ohio. We played anywhere people would have us. School talent shows, community centers, churches, parties…Then from there, the bars and local clubs led us to regional touring. I moved to NYC in the 90’s, and it all kept evolving from there.
MM: What inspired “The Gustafer Yellowgold Show” and how much of an influence does animation have on the performance?
GY: My desire to combine my love of drawing with my songwriting. The animation in the show is vital. It has the “other half of the information” you need to experience Gustafer songs at their fully intended level of Gustafer-ness.
MM: Of all the songs, have you any special favorites?
GY: Right now, there’s emphasis on my latest songs from my Audible Original. “Hot Malt Eagle” is a new rocker from that set. Really fun to play and sing.
MM: How do you plan out your concerts and what can attendees expect from live events?
GY: I try to make my live concerts have a flow of energy that grows as the show progresses. People should expect colorful, funny animations which go along with the songs, that are catchy and cool.
MM: What experiences do you hope fans take away from this album?
GY: My Audible Original “I’m From The Sun” is a fully narrated telling of Gustafer’s childhood on the Sun. I hope fans enjoy the songs and hope the story of young Gustafer inspires people to take a chance to be who they really want to be.
MM: Is there anything else that you would like to mention?
GY: It’s OK to not like raisins.
